“Photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” Elliott Erwitt
“Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.”
My road trip was the one I took in November 1981. years ago, the world looked different. I expected the Savannah and Charleston areas to be emptied of mass tourism due to the Covid Pandemic, and indeed, they were.
Savannah is still charmingly unique and the Historic District intact.
Most houses in that district date back to the period between 1815-1860, with the Colonial Park Cemetery in the middle. Many interred in this cemetery succumbed to the yellow fever epidemic of 1820. Sherman’s troops, camping there during the Civil War, moved headstones and altered inscriptions.
The most famous cemetery, Bonaventure Cemetery,
borders the Wilmington River, and it is a short drive to the beautiful, preserved Pulaski Fort. The ruins have a dark history: the fort was used for 600 confederate war prisoners under horrible conditions for a few years.
From Savannah, I drove south on local roads, in order to see the saltwater marshes. Fringing the coastline with tidal rivers, ponds and waist-high grasses, it is a magical world with ever changing sun- moonlight and tides.
I made a special stop at the Harris Neck Natural Wildlife Refuge. Officially it was closed, and the small visitor center deserted. There were, however, maps showing a small road with for nature walks to several ponds.
The time spent there was one of the highlights of my trip.
From Sea Island I crossed over to the Sarasota area in Florida. It was a beach vacation destination, on an overcrowded blinding, white quartz sand beach. I did not find much culture, inspiration, nor things to explore, except for the birds settled on a private stretch of a condominium high-rise.
It really made me wonder why there was no freshly caught sea food offered in restaurants or markets. Hurricanes, pollution and overfishing have changed the picture.
